Kids in Motion is a program designed for kids and teens to exercise and learn about fitness and nutrition as fun experience.
Located at the YMCA in Huntington, WV, the Kids in Motion program is available to kids ages 5-17 in the West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky Tri-State area. The program uses Body Mass Index (BMI), body fat percentage, and blood pressure tracking to measure progress and to customize the program to fit each individual child or teen for the healthiest results.
To get moving, children utilize exergaming equipment, which combines exercise and video games. Activities include games similar to those popular in arcades and at-home consoles that all ages can enjoy. They get kids moving to burn calories and increase agility, hand-eye coordination, and motor function all while having fun! Kids and teens compete with each other as well as their previous scores in order to earn points for prizes while burning calories along the way.
Kids in Motion is not just about fun and games. Kids, teens, and parents or guardians also receive important nutrition education through activities, like grocery store tours. These tours highlight how to shop for groceries for healthier meals and make a healthy lifestyle easier to sustain.
Another major component of the program is the opportunity for children to improve their self-esteem.
Participants are referred to the program by physicians, parents, nurses and physical education teachers.
